We’re Not Racist And Other Mentiras
While the United States experiences protests over the death of George Floyd and so many black lives that have been lost and in truth it’s a protest for basic human dignity in the face of historical systemic inequality and white supremacy and an intense plea for CHANGE NOW- there’s a general feeling that it’s an “American problem.” As a South-American, born in Lima, Peru to Argentine parents and a New Yorker raised in a diverse environment, I have experienced many different latinx cultures here and abroad.
In Latin America there’s almost unspoken energy of “ we’re not racist, we are all the same” yet who is voted into offices? Who are the wealthiest families? The faces we see in magazines? On TV and in the media?
Just like the US and many countries around the world, racism exists and the system has afforded white privilege to advance while brown and black sisters and brothers stay behind, working harder to stay ahead, stay alive and survive. This is NOT just an American issue and ignoring it won’t go away. This is a global issue that needs to be faced, admitted and laws changed to protect. I know most folks don’t want to release their privileged spaces -and this is it seems to me the only way forward. This world cannot continue to be a White person’s club. Walls must come down and we must heal hundreds of years of trauma and the present day impact of the stress and strife that black folks face every day of their lives.
No se puede ignorar. Some latinx have hidden black and indigenous roots to survive racist attacks/criticism and more- Dónde está tu Abuela? “Where is your grandma” often said about someone “passing” we know that these ways of being were originally protection- and it’s time to tap into that ancestral lineage mi gente.
Some of us may me more African, European or Indigenous but many of us have a rich lineage that extends into different races, colors, creeds and religions. Rise up for your ancestors. Rise up because we all come from Africa. Our brothers and sisters have suffered too long. We are One yet we’ve forgotten.
We’re here to end the power OVER paradigm and enter into thr power from WITHIN. Abramos los ojos, el corazon, dejemos el miedo atrás y abramos la bica! Let’s open our eyes, our hearts, leave fear behind and open our mouths! Los amo. I love you! Ya es hora del cambio 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
